James I. Black, Jr. founded James I. Black & Company in September 1964. Armed with 53 years experience in the financial service business, his vision was to provide a full-service financial service with an emphasis on personal service and integrity. The new company was located in downtown Lakeland on the corner of Lemon and Tennessee Avenue.

James I. Black & Company moved its office in 1971 to a newly remodeled 217 S. Florida Avenue in downtown Lakeland. The company supplied service there for 29 years before moving to 311 S. Florida Avenue.

James I. Black & Company has been an independent financial services firm since 1964 and it is still providing the most personal services in financial planning.

Confidentiality is the key in any strong financial relationship. We are very serious about our responsibility to protect your privacy by keeping information secure and confidential. We're providing this notice in accordance with the law requiring that we inform all clients of our processes for collecting, using, disclosing and protecting information. For Your Protection, it is important that you know that James I Black & Co does not sell any information about our customers to anyone. We take steps to protect the personal information we collect and maintain. At our home office, access to personal information is granted to individuals only to provide investments and services to clients or to serve another legitimate business need. Information is protected by physical, electronic and procedural measures. Security measures are continually monitored and upgraded.

Information Collection

To better understand your financial needs and make you aware of new investments and services that could help you reach your goals, we collect personal information from a variety of sources. This information falls into three categories:

Information we receive from you via applications, surveys or other forms. This information could include, but is not limited to, your name, address, Social Security number, and income.

Information about your transactions and account experience with James I Black & Co or our affiliates. This information may include your account balance, account activity, and usage of various services.

Information about your transactions and account experience with nonaffiliated third parties, such as providers of mutual funds, annuities, and other investments and services offered through James I Black & Co.

Guidelines for Information Disclosure

We do not disclose any personal information about our customers or former customers to anyone, except as required or permitted by law. We are occasionally required to provide information to regulatory agencies or to third parties in response to court orders.

In addition, it is often necessary to share customer information with other companies, including our affiliates, that assist us with a variety of business activities, including account administration, customer service, transaction processing, processing and delivery of account statements, research and analysis, and delivery of investments and services. For example, we may disclose certain information to a mutual fund company, proxy company or transfer agent to complete a transaction you initiated.

How to Limit the Sharing and Use of Information About You

If you exercise your privacy choice, JIB will continue to share information among our affiliates that identifies you (such as your name and Social Security number), as well as information about your transactions and experiences with us. We may also continue to share information about you with outside companies as permitted or required by law.

Company Mailing Choice

Unless we receive your objection, JIB may be required under the provisions of Rule 14b-1 of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Act of 1934 to release your name, address and number of shares to the issuers of securities you hold. James I Black & Co. Business Continuity and Contingency Planning

Securities industry regulations require that brokerage firms inform their clients of their plans to address the possibility of a business disruption that potentially results from power outages, natural disasters, or other events. James I. Black & Co has a comprehensive business continuity program in place that is reasonable designed to allow the firm to continue serving clients and provide them with access to their funds and securities in the event that our facilities are damaged or otherwise inaccessible.

Some examples:

Associates working from another location in the same general locale.
We have access to another data center out-of-state
In the event of damage to the building we would move technological support to the unaffected site with a short term interruptions in service. The firm’s response is dependent upon whether its utilities and the industry exchanges have been affected.
We have access to another data center out-of-state
We would update the website with additional contact phone numbers in event phone interruption.

While no contingency plan can eliminate all risk of service interruption or temporarily impeded account access, we continually assess and update our plans to mitigate all reasonable risk.

Customer securities

Customer securities—such as stocks and bonds that are fully paid for or excess margin securities—are segregated from broker-dealer securities in compliance with the SEC's Customer Protection Rule. This is a legal requirement for all broker-dealers. In the unlikely event of insolvency of a broker-dealer, these segregated assets are not available to general creditors and are protected against creditors’ claims. There are reporting and auditing requirements in place by government regulators to help ensure all broker-dealers comply with this rule.

Protection for securities and cash by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC): Accounts of James I Black & Co. are insured by SIPC for securities and cash in the event of broker-dealer failure.

SIPC provides up to $500,000 of protection for brokerage accounts held in each separate capacity (e.g., joint tenant or sole owner), with a limit of $250,000 for claims of uninvested cash balances.
